Exercise 4 - Individual post - Edwin Li

We have discussed methods of evaluation, ethical issues and our focus has been on the DECIDE model. Using the DECIDE model we've been able to roughly apply this framework on our project. Our decided goal is to evaluate our own application in the pop-app interface. Since we have a prototype on paper, this part has been fairly easy. We will ask questions mainly about the usability and these will be about the completeness of the language options, simplicity to use and understand, and finally if our concept is better than the existing ones.

We also discussed on how to evaluate other groups' projects but this was difficult since the progress is varying in different groups. However we will evaluate our own application with the heuristic method. The following key points will be taken into consideration:

1) The visibility of system status
2) Match between system and the real world
3) User control and freedom
4) Consistency and standards
5) Help users recognize, diagnose and recover from errors
6) Error prevention
7) Recognition rather than recall
8) Flexibility and efficiency of use
9) Aesthetic and minimalist design
10) Help and documentation

We like this method because we'll be doing this with real users. Finally we also discussed what to do with endless resources. My approach would be focusing on the usability of our program. I'd hire experts in different fields; aestethics, arts, acoustics, craftsmen and similar professionals in order to evaluate the usability from differenct perspectives. Since a good interface needs to be pleasing to the eye as well as the ear, and be simple to use and not obstruct the user in any way, a simple heuristic approach like ours made by college student's is good but not sufficient.
